Fitness Goals in 2020

Still on my 40 Before 40 are two challenges related to fitness and, if I am to have any chance of completing them, I need to get fit in 2020. Over the festive period I managed to put on weight just by looking at food and fester on the coach with a beer for the rest of it. So, I have set myself some fitness goals to change that.

Because of global warming, I have already managed to get outside and do some running this year even with my asthmatic lungs. In January I have ran 18km so far and I feel like I am getting back into a rhythm again. There is still a long way to go.

My main aim this year is to beat a personal best time in a race and to get myself in good shape so I am ready to take part in my first ultra marathon in 2021. I realised quite a few things about myself last year which I took into account when I was making these goals.

  • If I don’t have a clear goal in mind, I find it very hard to keep my fitness. Last year with netball trials and then a 10km to train for in August, I was very focused and found it easy to stick to, knowing I had a big event I needed to be ready for. For January I have promised myself that I will do at least 20 minutes of exercise 15 times during the month. That is basically doing something once every other day. I’m managing to stick to it but it is only the 11th January. I am going to set a small fitness goal each month to keep myself motivated.
  • I got myself into shape last year by doing little bits often. I didn’t do huge long runs or bike rides but a short run during lunch times for a couple of miles. Not completely tiring myself out meant I was motivated keep going the next day. I am convinced that, if I had completed two more longer runs before I did the 10km in Dublin, I would have beaten my personal best time. I was just lacking a bit more distance in my legs to keep me going over the final stages.
  • There is a running track close to where we live and I said before the Dublin 10km that I would go there to work on my speed and some different training. I never made it so this year I’m going to do it. Even if I go once a month that is better than nothing.
  • I have a book about running and how to coach yourself to train better. I dread to think how long I have had it gathering dust on my shelf – I’m going to read it this month to help me train better.
  • The most important thing I learnt came when I started with a colleague from work during lunchtime. When asked if I could join her she said she runs really slow. That wasn’t a problem for me. And the pace was slow, perhaps one and a half minutes per kilometer slower than I normally run but I loved it. I wasn’t covered in sweat, red faced and feeling exhausted by the end of it. It doesn’t matter how fast you run so long as you enjoy it. Now I try not to look at my watch as I’m running to see what pace I’m running. This is a lot easier in the colder months when I am wearing long sleeves; there’s no temptation to look down at my watch every five seconds. Of course, if I am training for a PB, I will need to focus on running quicker but at the moment my focus is on getting out there and losing some weight.

Looking at these goals it looks like a lot but the main thing is to enjoy exercising. I do enjoy running and exercise so it’s strange why I always end up stopping and not doing anything – as soon as I get back into the habit I wonder why I didn’t carry on in the first place.

Challenge #34 – completed

I can’t quite believe that I have successfully completed this challenge. I have been trying to do this challenge for most of my life. After a long, hard slog and struggle, I have stopped biting my nails. Finally.

The problem I had with trying to stop biting my nails was that I didn’t just have one trigger. I would bite my nails if I was bored, anxious, stressed or excited so it wasn’t like I could avoid situations where I was all of the above to stop myself from doing it. It’s a bit like knowing that you will ruin your diet if you have biscuits in the cupboards at home so you stop buying them completely to avoid temptation. The problem I had was that even if I didn’t buy the biscuits, I still had cake, chocolate and donuts lurching in the background to derail me.

Over the years I’ve tried so many things to try to stop. When I was younger I bought that stuff that’s like clear nail polish but tastes awful if you put it anywhere near your mouth. The problem was as soon as you wash your hands the stuff came off so it turned me into a compulsive handwasher instead of an anti-nail biter. Also if you put it on and ate something like a sandwich before it had completely dried, it made the food taste revoluting.

I also tried wearing an elastic band on my wrist so that I could pluck it every time I had the compulsion to bite. I guess it’s similar to electric shock treatment. You get something unpleasant when you demonstrate undesirable behaviour so that you change your behaviour. In theory it sounds like an easy solution but I kept forgetting to put a elastic band on my wrist so I had no way of shocking myself.

I even had false nails about 10 years ago but I found it irritating to type on a computer or open drink cans and it ruined my natural nails underneath so I decided it wasn’t worth the money.

Now I haven’t bitten my nails for last 5 months and I’m wearing nail polish for the first time in years. It wasn’t worth painting nails that were bitten down to the quick. I have finally kicked the habit because of the accumulation of shame. I started playing netball again this year and the first thing that you do before any tournament is show the umpires your nails – you shouldn’t be able to see the nail over the top of the finger if your palm is facing towards you in case you cause another player an injury. Having to present my hands to a strange was embarrassing when all my team mates had perfectly manicured nails.

Then five months ago I started a new job. I knew that I would be paraded around the office, like a dog that’s taken first prize at Crufts, and introduced to people. I didn’t want them to notice my fingernails and be hesitant to shake my hand. First impressions count and I didn’t want to be judged before I had even logged onto a computer.

I can’t believe it has taken me so long to kick this habit. Apart from it being unhygienic and unsightly, it’s also very painful when you accidentally rip off a bit of skin and it bleeds. It takes longer than you would think for it to heal because you are using your hands every day. I think knowing that I didn’t want to put myself through any unnecessary pain helped me to succeed.

I always think that biting your nails is something that most people do for a bit when they’re a kid and then they grow out of it. It might be later than planned but I have definitely grown out of it. Though I may have slightly replaced one habit with another. I have noticed that I tend twist my earrings more often that I used to especially when I am bored or thinking. But that’s at least more hygienic than the alternative.

End of Season shooting

The shooting season is almost over and this weekend we have been to not one, but two, end of season dinners for shooting events that we are involved in.

On Friday it was the end of season dinner for my work’s shooting section. I know this sounds completely crazy but there are companies in Switzerland have shooting sections as well as football teams. My theory is that everyone who participates is on a secret email list and, in case of the bank becoming under attack, we would all be emailed to come to the vault and defend the money. For the record, I have no idea where any of the bank valuts are for the banks that I have worked for!

The company-wide competition took place in August and it was the first time that I had used a small caliber weapon. It’s a lot lighter than the weapons that I have shoot with before and the distance is a shorter – only 50 metres. I managed to shoot 87 out of 100 which I was over the moon with.

I came 21 out of all of the women who competed and overall I came 65th out of 195. How good is that for a first attempt? Everyone who took part got a prize. There was a huge table with all sorts of prize to choose from. The higher up the ranking you are, the better the prize you can choose.

Examples of prizes were children’s bikes, coffee machines, electric toothbrushes, Nutri bullets, Lego sets, sets of steak knives and vaccum cleaners. It was almost impossible to choose what to take. I was so glad that the waterproof rucksack that I had my eye on was still there when it was my turn to go up and choose my prize. I now need to buy a smaller laptop that will fit in it!

Not only did we get prizes but we also got a nice 3-course meal and drinks. Whoever said it was the taking part that counts was right.

On Saturday we had the end shooting competition at the shooting club. This is my favourite competition of the year because again there are lots of prizes to be won but there are also bingo games at the end where you can win even more stuff to take home.

Overall I was pretty disappointed with my shooting at this event. I didn’t do as well as I have in previous competitions and I was hoping to beat my personal best and finally reach 70 out of 100. I didn’t.

This was another competition where everyone who competes gets a prize. There is a separate competition for this which is done in secret. You take two shots at the target and the difference between the two shots is calculated. So, if you get a 2 and a 72 then the difference is 70. The aim is to have the lowest difference. Everyone is ranked from lowest to highest. I somehow managed to get a difference of 3 and was 4th place overall. My other half came 2nd. We ended up lugging home about 6kg of various types of meat, 2 huge salamis and two big packets of smoked salmon between us. Then in the bingo game we won a huge basket of vegetables and two bottles of prosecco.

We now don’t need to buy any meat for the rest of the year (Christmas is sorted) even though we have given some away. I’m also glad that I decided to do my vegan challenge last year!

This week I have another shooting event. Back in August I took part in the regional shooting competition for women and everyone who took part will get together for a dinner to celebrate. I’m slightly nervous as the whole evening will be in Swiss German and normally have my boyfriend there to translate for me but as it’s only girls allowed I guess I will be having a free, crash-course in Swiss German as well as food.

40 Before 40: Challenge #31 – completed!

Number 31 on my 40 Before 40 list was to take up a new sport. I have already taken up an old sport this year by getting back into netball and I have been more active and getting back into running and cycling now that my knee injury is no longer a problem.

The sport I have decided to take up is shooting. Before I moved to Switzerland I had never even held a gun nevermind actually used one. But living with the President of one of the local shooting clubs got me intrigued and when I said that I wanted to go along and try it, he was (relatively) happy to take me along.

I’ve now participated in a few competitions and I seem to be improving and getting the hang of it each time I practice. It doesn’t seem all that hard, does it? But you have to be so precise and stay as still as possible while pulling the trigger and dreading the bang coming.

I did wonder if shooting is a sport. Some people might argue that it’s not. The fact that it is in the Olympics isn’t conclusive evidence because there are lots of sports that aren’t in the Olympics, like my beloved netball.

A definition of sport that I found on Wikipedia is sport includes all forms of competitive physical activity or games which,  through casual or organised participation, aim to use, maintain or improve physical ability and skills while providing enjoyment to participants, and in some cases, entertainment for spectators. So that settles it! Shooting is definitely a sport.

I’m most proud of having hit the target in the dead centre at the Feldschiessen competition in May. This competition is harder than a regular competition because you have to shoot a certain number of times in a set amount of time (6 shots in 6 minutes then 3 shots in a minute, then another 3 shots in a minute and finally 6 shots in 1 minute). If you don’t manage to pull the trigger within the time limit, the shots don’t count. It means that the pressure is on, especially when someone is behind you shouting out how much time is left. I shot a 100 and 96 in that competition. Unfortunately, at the range they don’t print any number above 95, instead they print a star, which is why on the photo you can see that I have 2 stars. I was only 2 points on winning a prize but the 100 made up for my disappointment.

The shooting club, where I am a now an active member, celebrated its 150 year anniversary last weekend. There was a celebratory dinner on Friday with entertainment and on Saturday the club house was open to anyone who wanted to come and shoot. As I was working all day manning the bar, I didn’t get to shoot but I will be going to a training session soon to enter the anniversary shooting competition. Then in August I will probably go to Wyberschiessen (Ladies Shooting Competition) in the local area to compete for the first time in that competition.

I’m glad that I choose a sport that isn’t completely focused on cardio. Not because I don’t have the desire to do something physical but because it is a sport that can teach me different things. I have learnt (or am still learning) how to achieve complete concentration and how to remain calm under pressure, which are both good skills to have in life.

My challenge was to take up a new sport and I will be sticking this one in the future.

Finger on the trigger

I’m recovering from a nasty finger injury that I stupidly got while playing netball last week. I say stupidly because it was clearly my fault. I jumped for a rebound but I didn’t have my hand fully open and the ball caught my right index finger flush on its tip at speed.

It hurt straight away but I carried on play in pain. By the end of training my finger was red, swollen and painful. By the next morning I had reduced mobility in the joint and it was painful to bend.

It is only now that I have realised how often I use my index finger on my right hand. I hurts when I type, I can’t pressed down any buttons or even the nossel of a harispray can or perfume bottle and doing up buttons is also extremely tricky. I have resorted to using my left hand as much as possible but, as I don’t write with my left hand, it is not always the best solution.

One thing did improve unexpectedly this weekend. The shooting season is underway again. I was seriously doubting that I would be able to pull a trigger with my battered and bruised trigger finger. While I didn’t manage to shoot consistently enough to win a medal, I did manage to hit a 100! A 100 is the score that you get when you hit the target dead in the centre. That means I hit the dead centre (1cm) from 300m away. How amazing is that! Imagine how much better I would have performed without my finger feeling like it was on fire.

The main thing that I am grateful in in this whole situation is that I managed to do this in training and not in two weeks when I will be away with the netball team participating in a tournament in Berlin. If this had’ve happened in the first game of the tournament, it would be likely that I wouldn’t be able to continue and would spend the rest of the weekend warming the bench.  However, now I have learnt my lesson to be ready with my hands open to catch the ball so this sort of injury should not happen in the future.

Netball in Copenhagen

I’m just about fully recovered from a weekend in Copenhagen playing netball with Zürich Netball Club, who I decided to join in January. I worked out that it had been almost 15 years since I had been on a netball tour which is one of the scariest things that I have heard in a long time.

We arrived at the hotel with the news that they had overbooked the twin beds in the hotel so we had to make do with double beds. This was slightly daunting considering that some of us didn’t know each other well. There wasn’t a great deal that we could do about it and I was so tired I could have slept standing up in a broom cupboard.

On the Saturday we headed to the venue. The hall was packed with teams from Sweden, Holland, France and Germany. It was a mixed tournament so it wasn’t a surprise to see a few men there but we were the only team to only have women playing. I know from experience that its not always an advantage to have men on a netball team but it would turn out that these men had played before and were pretty handy on the court.

The tournament was opened by Zindyi Mandela, the South Africa ambassdor in Denmark, who I later found out was the daughter of Nelson and Winnie Mandela. She gave a great speech about how important it is for women to be involved in team sport. How amazing is it that she took the time out of her day to come and wish a group of expats all the best for the day!

I had completely forgotten how physically demanding a sport netball is. Playing competitively is so different to training with your team mates. My legs were almost dead after the first few games. Luckily the organisers provided snacks and cake to help with blood sugar levels.

We played 8 games in total and, although we didn’t end up winning the competition, the games that we did lose were by very small margins. After the prize giving we headed back to the hotel for a quick shower and change before a buffet dinner at a local restaurant with the other teams and then onto a trendy cocktail bar called Curfew for some celebratory drinks.

I woke up the next day still shattered which is yet another reminder that I need to improve my fitness. I could barely walk up stairs for the next few days. After a late-ish breakfast we went on a free walking tour, visited The Little Mermaid Statue and headed back to the airport.

Thank you to my team mates Claudia, Lauren, Lorna, Kim, Arran, Abby, Chelsea, Emma and Konio for a great weekend of netball and for such a great time. I’m hoping for an equally great weekend in another European city with the girls soon!

Getting fit in Lent

Despite the fact that I noticed a while ago that there are Easter egg and chocolate rabbits in the shops, I hadn’t realised that this meant we were also fast approaching Lent. In fact I only remembered that it was Pancake Tuesday when everyone I knew on Facebook was posting pictures of pancakes that evening.

It has been a while since I have given up (or taken up) something for Lent and I thought I had missed the boat. It was getting short notice to decide exactly what I should do –  after all you don’t want to commit yourself to something that after a few days you realise is going to be impossible to achieve.

Rather than give up something, I have decided to take on something. For me this is slightly easier psychologically because I don’t feel like I am denying myself, rather that I am making positive steps towards something.

For that reason I have decided to get fit for Lent. Every day I will try to do some sporting activity that gets my heart rate elevated. Over the course of Lent, I hope that I will see a noticeable difference in my fitness levels and I will weigh less than I do now. This doesn’t mean that I will be running 12 miles a day, every day until the middle of April. Firstly, I am no where need fit enough to do that and, secondly, it is important to do a range of different activities and not the same ones all of the time.

I hope that I will be able to getting more running done but also some strength exercises, like sit-ups, press-ups and planks, to help with stamina and endurance. I plan to make a log of all of the exercises that I do and I will share this at the end of Lent so you can see how I have done.

I’m quite excited about this mini-challenge. The weather is getting nicer outside which means it is the perfect time to be getting active again.

Old School Sports

Like most people, I started the year with the intention of being more active and getting fit again. For most of 2018 I was on the treatment table at the local physiotherapist because of a knee injury. This made the year frustrating in terms of health and fitness.

Healed and healthy, I now have no excuses. 2019 has had a great start sport-wise. I decided to rekindle my passion for two sports that I haven’t played for the past 10 years or more, as well as get back into running.

As January and the beginning of February have been very cold, I decided that the best thing to do was stay inside and get in a pool. If I am honest, some of my motivation has come from seeing my niece at her swimming lessons. She loves being in the water so much and enjoys her lessons. I remember going to swimming as a kid and having as much fun as she does. These were simpler times where I would just do the sports that I enjoyed and not because I wanted to maintain my weight.

At first it was hard. It felt a bit boring going back and forth. But I have noticed that I am finding it easier and I feel a lot stronger than I did a few weeks ago. I remember getting out of the pool in the first week in January and having to steady myself on the side because my legs felt like jelly. Now, I am swimming further and pushing myself to do a little bit further than last time and I am enjoying it a lot. I have also found that it gives me time to think about things. Once I get into a rhythm, it’s like my body is on auto pilot and my brain has the freedom to think. Having time to think about things is something that I think we forget about doing these days.

The second sport I have tried is netball. Netball isn’t so well-known in Switzerland and most of the players are expats from UK, Australia and New Zealand. I felt really welcomed by the team and it wasn’t too hard to get back into the swing of things. I was wondering if I would have forgotten how to catch a ball but it turns out that netball is like riding a bike!

I didn’t feel like I was putting much effort into all of the running around (I was playing GS after all). But when I looked at the mirrors in the toilets afterwards, I realised that I bore a striking resemblance to a boiled beetroot. I used to be embarrassed about how red my face got during sport but it is a good indicator that I have been working hard. No one can accuse me of not putting effort in to something when I have changed colour quicker than a chameleon. Having said that, I know that as I get fitter that my redness will reduce – which is also good motivation!

As the weather has improved, I even decided to go running. My knee is better and there is no reason why I shouldn’t when there is no snow and ice on the ground waiting to trip me up. Oh wait, there is a reason. An old nemesis of mine, also from my school days has decided to rear its ugly head. Asthma.

I was diagnosed with asthma when I was a teenager. After cross country running, my classmates told me that I sounded like the laughing dog, Muttley, from The Wacky Races TV series. So, I decided it would be a good idea to get checked out because the symptoms seemed to point to asthma. I was given an inhaler to relieve the symptoms and then I sort of forgot about it.

I ran 10ks, half marathons and even a marathon and I didn’t need my medication to relieve any symptoms but they weren’t there. I thought I had managed to outgrow a childhood illness (which is completely possible). I realised last week that I was wrong. My asthma is particularly affected by cold temperatures, which is why this hadn’t become apparent when I have been swimming and playing netball inside where the temperature is warmer.

After a short run I sounded like Wheezy the Penguin from Toy Story 2 when he has lost his squeak: my chest was tight and I felt like I was suffocating. I admitted defeat, called the doctor and asked for an appointment.

Armed with my inhaler, I feel like a different person. Two runs powered by medication and I can breathe easily, I’m not wheezing and I am actually enjoying running again. If I keep going like this, I think that I will be able to hit my fitness goals for 2019. However, even if I don’t, even if my 10k personal best eludes me, I know that I am on the right track for a happier and healthier me.
