Medical Matters

No one likes to go to see the doctor, do they? Unfortunately, in the past few months our household has been a regular visitor to doctors and medical professionals.

First of all, I had a accident when I was running which was causing me pain at the back of my knee. The knee would be aching for days after any form of exercise and would hurt when I was going upstairs or bending my knee in any shape or form.

I went to see a knee specialist at the hospital and the words “possible torn meniscus” and “MRI” were muttered. I was happy when he suggested a course of physiotherapy to see if this improved things. I went for physio for twice a week for three weeks. I tried to run on the knee as well and I was really happy that, although I could feel some pain, it wasn’t half as bad as it had been. The doctor agreed to carry on with more physiotherapy, as it seemed to be helping a lot.

I have been frustrated while I have been out of action. I haven’t be able to go running, play sport or go cycling. I am really excited to report that when I went running last weekend, I had virtually no pain or aching feelings in my knee immediately or in the days afterwards. The physio also said this week that it was the first time that he wasn’t able to feel fluid in my knee. I am so happy that I will be able to get back outside and do some running training. I will feel like a dog that has been let of its lead for a few weeks at least before I start complaining that I don’t like running and I don’t want to do it anymore. But this means no more hospital or physio appointments.

My other half was in hospital at the start of May for an operation. It was not an emergency and was planned, so it wasn’t a big deal or anything that was risky. However, it turned out that both of us needed treatment in the end…

I arrived to pick him up and take him home. We had to wait for a while until the doctor came in to see if he was ok and to confirm that he was ok to go home. It was a hot day but in the morning when I left for work it was raining and chilly so I wore my winter coat into work. By the time I got to the hospital, I was so warm that I undid the back of my blouse to try and cool myself down.

Shortly after, the doctor came in to talk about the operation and ask my other half how he was feeling and if he was in any pain and so on. It was then that I was starting to feel faint and I noticed that I was beginning to sweat more and more. I told my boyfriend I wasn’t feeling so well and he told me to sit down on the bed and have a lie down but I felt stupid taking his bed from him when I had only come to visit.

The next thing I remember was I was lying in the bed, wondering why my boyfriend was standing next to the bed and a male nurse was taking my blood pressure. Apparently I fainted and hit my head on the wall but I just remember waking up and feeling a lot better than I did a few moments before.

On the plus side, I did get a free cup of coffee once I had come round and then we were quickly off home.

I am hoping that my knee rehabilitation continues to go in the right direction and I don’t have to go anywhere near a hospital in the near future. I don’t want to have to faint again to get a free cup of coffee.

Cookbook challenge

Thanks to my vegan diet challenge, my Challenge #25 of cooking every recipe from one cookbook is going well because I chose a vegan cookbook!

Here are the latest recipes I have made:

Almond and Cinnamon Drink

This was basically a smoothie and easy to make. It wasn’t all that special and I didn’t include the star anise in the recipe because I don’t like the flavour of aniseed.

Little Potato Cakes with Yogurt Dip

This was so easy to make and so tasty. I somehow managed to make about 3 times as many as the recipe said it would make and I though that we might be able to freeze some for another day. But nope, we ate them all in one sitting!

Roasted Chickpeas

This was a spicy snack and only took 20 minutes to bake in the oven. It was my idea to take these into work as a alternative to snacking on fruit and nuts in the office. However, they were so moreish that I ate them all soon after they had cooled down in the oven.

Soba Noodle Summer Rolls with Tofu and Coriander

I have only made spring noodles once before and that was on a Vietnamese cooking course that I went on last year. These are called summer rolls and not spring rolls because they are not deep-fried so they are a bit healthier. They were easy to make but a bit fiddly to get all of the ingredients in the wraps and wrap them up neatly. The recipe also suggested making a peanut butter dip made with soya sauce and agave syrup and was a nice accompaniment to the summer rolls.

Asian Noodle Salad

Making good on my promise to make and bring more of my lunches into work with me to save money, I made this Asian Noodle Salad. I didn’t use the specific noodles that the recipe stated. I used the soba noddles that I used for the summer rolls above. Our cupboards are so full of ingredients that I have had to buy to make one dish from this book that I am running out of space to put things. The salad itself was a nice alternative to a salad with lettuce and tomato and didn’t take long at all to make. The peanut butter dressing was ok but it turned a bit solid by the time I was able to pour it over the salad. I would definitely make this again.

Mexican Pepper Salad

Another lunchtime option (and we also had a portion of it with dinner one evening as well) that was very easy to make. Because the weather has been recently good in the last few weeks I was able to eat this outside in the sunshine. I’m not sure why this was a Mexican salad because I always associate Mexican food with spicy, hot food.

Quick Ajvar

This a Serbian roasted red pepper and aubergine relish. It’s really nice and spicy and goes well with toast or just on the side with vegetables. It really was quick to make – the vegetables are roasted and then puréed with oil and seasoning.

Colourful Little Toast Spirals

The quick ajvar was a main component of these. The ajvar is spread onto wholemeal bread that has been squashed flat by a rolling pin. The bread is then rolled up and baked in the oven for 15 minutes. It was a quick and easy snack to make and delicious too.

Sandwich spread

I was slightly nervous about this recipe. The ingredients (vegetable stock, rice cakes, onions and tomato purée) seemed a bit unusual to put together to make anything that would taste nice. However, I made some sandwiches with this spread and grilled vegetables. The mixture also kept well in the fridge so I could have it a few days later on bread or with vegan crackers.

Little Quinoa Balls with Mint Sauce

Like many of the things that I have made from this book, my creation looks nothing like the pictures in the book. In this case, I used multi-coloured quinoa whereas the book used the normal variety. The next problem with this recipe was that it said that the quinoa needed to be made into balls the size of tennis balls – I’m not sure then were the “little” part comes from. When I tried to move the balls around in the pan while frying them, they are started to disintegrate. I decided to make small burger-like patties so that they would definitely be cooked in the middle. It meant that I ended up with about 20 of these quinoa “burgers” which didn’t last for very long!

That’s 34 recipes out of a total of 100 already finished!

Things I learnt in May

Here are some surprising things that I have learnt over the last month.

1. It is possible to have too many bank holidays in one month. This May we had 3 bank holidays: May Day, Ascension Day and late May Bank Holiday. I have nothing against bank holidays but I also realised that after May we have one bank holiday (1st August for the Switzerland National Day) and then none until Christmas. Can they be spread out a bit more please? The other thing is that two of them were in the middle of the week so you have to work the day before and the day after. I have said it before and I will say it again: it would be better to move the day to the beginning or the end of the week so that people could enjoy a long weekend.

2. I have missed being at home. This month was the first time that I had been back in the UK in 2018 and the first time I have personally seen family and friends. What was unusual and a welcomed surprise was that the weather was nothing short of glorious.

3. Did you know that there is a difference between a shrimp and a prawn. I thought that the words could be used interchangeably but apparently that is not correct. While both have five pairs of legs, a prawn has claws on three of the five pairs of legs and a shrimp only has two. Who knew?

4. I have a higher than average reading speed. Just by chance I came across a speed reading test on the internet. It turns out that I have a reading speed of 430 words per minute with a reading comprehension of 100%. Ironically in May I have lost a bit of my reading momentum because of other projects getting in the way but I am hoping that I will be able to get back on track in June and be able to sit with my head in a book more often.

5. Be kind to your knees. I have been struggling with a knee problem for sometime and I have now been referred to a knee specialist. Luckily it looks like rest and physiotherapy is helping and nothing as drastic as surgery is needed. But still look after your knees because if they weren’t there, you would miss them. A lot.

6. I am a librocubicularist. It sounds like a really strange star sign but it actually means a person who reads in bed. I love reading and I love reading in bed. Even though sometime I do fall asleep with a book in bed. I guess there really is be a name for everything.

I’m not sure how it is the end of May. Time seems to be racing away with itself at the moment, which has to be a sure sign that I am getting old. Whatever you have been up to this May, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

3 weeks in

Three weeks in and my challenge is still going well. This week I ate out a total of four times (yes, four) and managed not to starve as well as go to a BBQ on a bank holiday. Here is my week in food…

Aubergine

If we are what we eat, I am dangerously close to waking up next week as a n aubergine. I have made Moroccan aubergine dip called Zaalouk, Aubergine Schnitzel, grilled aubergine, Aubergine Rollmops and a Turkish dish called Imam Bayildi- I’ve never been a huge fan of aubergine; partly because I have never known what to do with it apart from put it in a curry. But there are so many things you can do it. I might lay off in for a few weeks though before I create an aubergine shortage in Central Europe.

Recommendations

My friend Araz recommended the Turkish dish. My dear God it was so tasty and so simple to make. I will definitely be making it again and long after my challenge is over. Although I am definitely not going hungry on this diet, I’m always very open to recommendations so if you know of any vegan recipes please feel free to let me know!

Eating out

I had brunch with a writing friend. I was so jealous of her delicious bread topped with egg and cottage cheese. Thank god she didn’t order anything with bacon! I might have done or said something that I regretted. I had a delicious and healthy açai bowl full of fruity goodness, which was the only vegan option on the menu.

I had lunch during the week with the recruiter who placed me at my new job. He wanted to catch up and see how the first few weeks in the new place were going. Going to a very good Italian restaurant where they serve incredible but non-vegan pizzas and pastas for you to ask if you can have the goats cheese salad without the goats cheese was incredible difficult! I got a very strange look from the waiter but hey-ho, that’s life!

I also met a friend, who initially wanted to go to an all-you-can-eat pizza place. She was good about finding somewhere else to go instead. We went to a place called The Artisan which grows a lot of its own ingredients in the garden outside the restaurant and has a lot of vegan options. I had the vegan burger which came with homemade vegan cheese and a vegan ice cream. I was very happy when I left.

For team lunch, I suggested a Morrocan place where I had a nice salad and vegetable couscous. I am not sure if many of the other liked it but I definitely did. To be honest I was just happy to be able to have something off the menu.

May Day BBQ

The first of May was a bank holiday in Switzerland and I was invited to a BBQ. I was nervous about going because I would have to tell yet more people that I was being vegan “for fun” for a while. I was surprised that we had a interesting and funny discussion about my challenge (and the other challenges that I will be doing). I took along a sweet potato burger, sweetcorn frittas and mango chutney that I had made at home. Mark was very sweet and offered to cook my burger before the others so that I didn’t get the fat from the sausages, chicken and steak that other people had brought along. This was a crying shame because I was hoping that some of the flavours from the other food would make its way to my burger! Only joking! My food was delicious and for once I didn’t have food envy. I also go my very own vegan cupcakes to finish the meal that Stefan had made just for me!

Tied to the kitchen

I seem to be spending most of my weekend in the kitchen preparing and making things. I am enjoying trying new things but I’m not sure if I can carry on with such passion for the next 9 weeks. It would be nice just to grab something from the supermarket and warm it up. I also feel like I am taking a step back for woman-kind by spending so much time in the room that they have been trying to get out of. I have a line from Annie Lennox and Aretha Franklin’s Sisters are Doin’ It for Themselves (“They’re coming out of the kitchen and they’ve got something to say to you!”) on a constant loop in my head. But actually I’m really enjoying it so I will be staying there for the time being!

Photo an Hour: 28th April 2018

I have missed the last two Photo An Hour days because I was on holiday in South America. For the February edition, I actually landed in Buenos Aires at 6am and was so excited to be there that I completely forgot. For the March edition, I think we were transferring from one country to another which possibly wouldn’t be so interesting to photograph.

Now back in Switzerland with no distractions and a few helpful reminders on my phone, here is what I got up to on 28th April 2018.

7am: it’s early and it’s quiet so I decide to read some more of my book. I’m reading Crime by Irvine Welsh at the moment.

8am: Making a spot of breakfast: on the left scrambled eggs for him, on the right a vegan “scrambled egg” made from tofu, turmeric, chilli and coriander

9am: It looks like the weather will be nice today

10am: Writing a few posts for my blog

11am: Time for German homework

12pm: Snack time

1pm: Forgot to put the dishwasher on this morning!

2pm: Decided to label all the jars we have in the cupboard so we know what is in what, especially with the different types of flour

3pm: Someone (not me!) has fallen asleep so I will go back to doing some reading

4pm: Time to use the one gadget I have bought this year and go for a run

5pm: Back from run looking like a beetroot but need to do my exercises for my knee

6pm: Homemade dips to have with our grilled vegetables later

7pm: The sun has gone in but the BBQ is ready! All homemade apart from the bread!

8pm: We are watching The Godfather

9pm: We are still watching The Godfather

10pm: Time to write my diary before going to bed

My first week as a Vegan

Despite what most people have been telling me surviving the first week wasn’t so difficult and I am feeling surprisingly good. I was anticipating feeling lethargic and having headaches but so far the side effects that I have felt haven’t been that bad at all.

I was initially thinking that I would blog everything that I have eaten this week to prove that I haven’t been starving myself but I thought that might be a bit boring. Instead I will be blogging about what I have found easy or difficult this week.

So, here is my run down of how my week was:

Breakfast

Since I came back from South America, I have been mainly having fruit/veggie smoothies any way so breakfasts haven’t been a huge change for me. I also had porridge one day made with rice milk – I can’t face porridge made with water – and added some raspberries on top because I normally have a drizzle of honey over the top.

Planning

As it was a bank holiday on Monday, I used the time to set myself up for the week and plan exactly what I would eat. As my boyfriend was away on military service, I knew that the days when I was back home late after German class that I didn’t want to start cooking late and it would be better to have something already prepared. I made some roasted red pepper soup with chili so that this could be warmed up when I got back. I also made some vegan quiches, which were easy to make and very tasty. I met my friend, Mark, for lunch on Tuesday and he sampled them as well, so I have an independent witness.

Eating Out

My new team at work is a bit more sociable than at my previous job and we go for a team lunch every Friday. I was quick to get a suggestion in so that I knew that I would be able to eat something. As the item that I chose wasn’t labelled as vegan, I asked if there were any sauces or dressings on the salad and the waiter was happy to tell me that there was no diary products (cream, milk, yogurt) in it.

Freebies

One of the things I like about commuting in the spring and summer is that there are always freebies handed out at the main train station. This week there were two freebies – neither of which I could actually try. I brought them home with me as gifts for my boyfriend when he came back for the weekend. One of them was Rivella. A pop drink which is made from a milk by-product. I knew that this was off-limited and, for me, it is almost as bad as not being able to eat cheese! The second was an Espresso shot. It was a good job that I check the ingredients before because there was actually milk added. I’m not Italian but even I know that you don’t put milk into Espresso. So no freebies for me this week.

Other People

Other people irritate me most of the time but this week, especially at the beginning, have really irritated me. It seems like everywhere I looked there was someone eating a bratwurst, a McDonald’s or a milkshake. All of which are completely off-limits and have made me obsess a bit over food and the things that I am denying myself. The thing that really took the biscuit (which I also can’t eat!) was when I found out that Friday in the office is bacon butty day. The place where they get them from also has black pudding as well as egg, bacon and sausages. The smell was intense and lingered for most of the morning. But I stayed strong and resisted temptation.

#40Before40: Challenge #14

By the time you are reading this, I will have hopefully survived three days on a vegan diet with about another 87 days to go. As a quick recap, I decided that this would be a good challenge for me to undertake because I have previously tried a vegetarian diet for three months and I didn’t find it too difficult. It seemed logical that a vegan diet would be the next challenge.

Also, I read a lot of information saying that a vegan diet is very beneficial not just for animals and the environment, but also for anyone who follows a vegan diet. I’ve been quite surprised by the number of international athletes who are vegan and the number of athletes who are becoming vegan and reporting big gains. Of course, there are lots of Hollywood actors who are also vegan but they try out some weird stuff, so they haven’t  been a source of inspiration.

In essence, the challenge is to eat a vegan diet for three months. A vegan diet means not consuming animal products: no meat, eggs, milk, honey or anything else that was produced by an animal. I have had a long hard think about whether it is cheating to eat product that says, for example, “May contain milk” because it was made in factory that produces milk and this could mean that cross contamination has occurred. As I am not 100% motivated to ban animal products from my diet because of the traditional reasons that vegans do, I don’t class this as cheating. However, wherever possible I will avoid eating the products.

As I have maintained from the beginning, I think this is doable if the right planning and preparation has been made. I have no hope of succeeding this challenge if I decide a lunchtime that I will pop into the nearest supermarket and pick something up for lunch. As a result, I am planning meals one week in advance. I am not so optimistic that I will be able to keep this up for the whole challenge but I will try.

I will be researching new recipes online and in a vegan cookery book that I bought in preparation for this challenge at the end of last year. There should definitely be enough recipes and food ideas that I don’t get too bored or starve.

I started the challenge on 16th April 2018 and I am due to finish it on 15th July 2018. I will be blogging about my experience and how I am getting on with the challenge as I go. I know that a lot of people roll their eyes and groan when someone declares (and it is always a declaration isn’t it?) that they are vegan. So if that sort of thing offends you look away now! Or, you could read on as I complain and squirm about my self-imposed veganism. Whatever you are eating: Bon Appetit!

The rules are very simple:

This is a quote that I only recently became familiar with. In a world where everyone is desperate to receive acceptance and attention, I think the quote is pretty apt. I make no secret of the fact that, at times, I would happily lock myself away from the world for a week or two without any problems. There is definitely skill in being comfortable in your own company. Lots of people would be better advised to learn this skill than to hang around with people who don’t make them happy.

I’ve broken the rules because I really wanted to join in in the challenge. I haven’t nominated anyone at all for the challenge, because I’m not sure that I know any bloggers that will definitely reply.

Three Quotes, Three Day Challenge – Day 2

I have been nominated by the brilliant, Basel-based blogger and bookworm Bev (please don’t try saying that after a few drinks, it might get you into trouble) to publish three of my favourite quotes in three days. Today is Day 2.

The rules are very simple:

Today I would like to chose this quote:

Confucius was definitely not referring to this when he wrote this but on a personal level, this is exactly how I feel about running. People tend to boast about how fast they run or what their times are for certain distances and compare themselves with other people. It makes themselves feel superior to others. In actual fact, how fast you can run doesn’t make you any better or worse than anyone else that you meet during your life. The exception that proves the rule is professional athletes because that is their job. For anyone else, the most important thing is that you are out there and giving it a go, which is far better than not even bothering to give it a go at all.

Of course, this quote is applicable to all areas of life and not just running. Slow progress is still progress. The most important thing is to keep going. You will get there in the end.

I don’t shy away from declaring that I am a dirty rule breaker because I really wanted to join in in the challenge. I haven’t nominated anyone, because I’m not sure that I know any bloggers that will definitely reply. I’m still waiting for the bad karma to strike.

Post-holiday Blues

Since I have arrived back, I have got a bad case of the Post-holiday Blues. I honestly wasn’t ready to come back. I thought after five weeks of moving from one place to another would be enough but I could have carried on travelling for at least another few weeks.

I don’t start my new job until next week and I had more than good intentions that this week I could get X,Y and Z done and use the time wisely and productively. I have no idea when I will next have to opportunity to spend a week doing what I want without any outside pressure.

So far I have only been able to find the motivation to download my photos (but not sort them or make them into a photobook) and to wash all of our clothes, which took the best part of a day.

To cheer myself up, I have decided to make a list of reasons why it is better to be back at home rather than on the road.

1. No daily application of suncream

I don’t need as long to get ready in the morning because I don’t need to apply suncream to every exposed part of my body before going out. I did go out once in Bolivia without suncream on and I was almost burnt to a crisp, even though the sun was hidden behind layers and layers of clouds. In fact, the only part of my body that is remotely brown are my feet. How am I meant to show that off in the office.

2.  I know where things are

On the road, I was constantly searching for things that I needed that had managed to find their way to the very bottom of my bag. It would take me five minutes to find the charger for my Kindle. Broadly speaking, at home I know where things are and they haven’t moved around during transit.

3. I have clean clothes

My bag was organised by using three plastic bags: one for clean clothes, one for “wearable” clothes and one for dirty clothes. At the end of the trip, I was nervous about opening thing bag with the dirty clothes. It really did stink. I was thinking about incinerating it when I got back home because I wasn’t entirely sure if I would be able to cope with the collective smell at the end of five weeks.

4. No mosquitos

Mosquitos are one of my pet hates. The ironic thing is that they really, really like me. No, I mean it. If there is one mosquito within twenty miles of me, it will find me and bite me. I’m like a walking-buffet for insects. This means that every early afternoon/evening I was reaching for the DEET, anti-mosquito wristbands and any other method which is remotely proven to keep mossies away. I don’t have that problem in Switzerland. At least not until the summer…

5. Toilet paper

This seems like a strange one but in a lot of South American countries you aren’t supposed to put toilet paper down the toilet. There is always a waste bin beside the toilet that you are meant to use. My problem with this wasn’t that I forgot to put the toilet paper in the bin but the fact that in public toilets this is just not so hygienic, although I get that the sewage systems in these countries aren’t so good and paper being flushed down the drains would increase the likelihood of blockages. I’m just glad that I no longer have to use a toilet paper bin.

6. Food

Although I did find the food amazing, there are always things that you miss when you are travelling, things that you can’t buy abroad. So it is nice to be back to essential foodstuffs that you are used to. In South America I was surprised by how few vegetables there were. It could have been the time of year that we were there but I’m glad to be back in a place where there is a greater variety of vegetables on offer.

7. Tea

Other countries just don’t go an English Breakfast tea right. I have been drinking coffee, which is not like me at all, and juices. There were “tea” options but the one time I tried it, I was bitterly disappointed. I saw on the menu that they served tea with milk. Perfect! Nice cuppa in the afternoon. Below is what arrived. I just didn’t know where to look. Lesson learnt: lay off the tea until you are back home with a Tetley teabag and just a splash of milk!

That’s the list. Now that I’ve written it, I do feel bit better. Experiencing amazing things each day makes you forget the little things that you miss. What do you miss when you are on holiday?
