Vegan BBQ

27 Jul

Last weekend to celebrate the end of my vegan challenge, I invited some friends round for a vegan BBQ. I say vegan but there was steak and chicken on offer for those who wanted it. However, all of the other dishes that I prepared were vegan (and that included not one but two desserts).

I was glad that everyone was keen to come round and see what food would be on offer and no-one backed out because they thought that the food would be so bad that they would go home hungry.

There is no way anyone was walking away from the party hungry because I grossly over-estimated how much food that I needed to prepare for 10 people. Here is a list of the food that I prepared:

  • Vegan Bratwurst
  • Green Lentil Salad
  • Tuscan Bean Salad
  • Guacamole
  • Hummus
  • Courgette Spaghetti
  • Greek Green Beans
  • Spicy Salsa
  • Smokey Tofu Pate
  • Homemade flatbreads
  • Orange and Chia Seed cupcakes
  • Raspberry and Custard Whirl
  • as well as a range of vegetables for on the BBQ.

Everyone was complimentary about the food. However, I was really disappointed about how the Raspberry and Custard Whirl turned out. I think that the custard wasn’t thick enough and I was happy to admit that it was a failure (which I guess you shouldn’t technically say to your guests but it was true).

To make things a bit more fun, I asked everyone to bring an exotic vegetable to go on the grill. I was so surprised about how everyone was happy to get involved. People turned up with vegetables that I have never even heard of before. Have you ever heard of a dodi, for example, or a zebra tomato?

There was a unconventional prize for the winner. I am not sure how to describe it so I will just show you this picture here.

Hanna was the lucky winner of Mister Melonman. She was literally lost for words!

Thank you to everyone who came to the BBQ and to Stefan who took the photos because I forgot to take any!

It just goes to show that you don’t always have to put meat on the grill. I have found that there are lots of alternatives that you can find which are just as good if not better!

This week’s happenings

14 Apr

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I have no idea where this week has gone. I have been meaning to sit down and write something for the whole week but I just haven’t managed it. It seems that the week is jam packed full of interesting and not so interesting things to do and the weekends are all go as well.

Here is a quick run down of what I have been up to this week:

German lessons – I’m now back into the routine of having my German lessons twice a week. I am finding this level harder than the other levels. This is probably understandable as this is the last level and the exam is a bit different than the other levels. The usual self doubt has more than once crept into my mind in the past week but it isn’t like I have to take the exam in the next week, so I am trying to keep myself calm. I know that when I do come to take the exam, I will wonder why I found it so difficult to begin with.

Settling in at work – I have now been at my new job for two weeks. It’s been a shock to come back to work but slowly I am getting back into it. It is quite an interesting time to be working for a Russian company, as I am sure you can appreciate. I think over the coming weeks I should be able to start making an impact at work and implement some real changes. It should be the start of some interesting times.

Reading – my fear that my impressive reading momentum would slow down after heading back to “real life” has been unfounded. Of course, I am not reading books within days but I am managed to get through a book or more per week. I also read Gabrielle’s book who I met at the Writing Group on Wednesdays. I was a bit reluctant to read the book because I am not really a fan of romance, but I found myself identifying myself with a lot of the situations in the book. I wonder if I could be cast as the lead role when the film is made?

40 Before 40 – this challenge is literally on my mind the whole time. I am making progress with the reading challenges (see above) but I think that I am lagging a bit behind on the movie challenge. I was aiming to watch a movie a week but I haven’t managed to so far. One of the things that is off-putting is that some of the movies are three hours or longer, so it’s difficult to watch these during the week unless I start watching them as soon as I get home from work. I will endeavour to get back on track with this in the coming weeks. There are also a few bank holidays coming up in May, so this might be a good time to get back on track. Also, I will be starting one of my biggest challenges on Monday, when I will be attempting to eat a vegan diet for three months. I have made a meal plan for next week, as I am certain that planning is the key to this. Let’s see how it goes…

First BBQ of the season – last weekend we had a BBQ. Related to my vegan challenge starting, I have eaten as much meat and cheese as possible this week. I do love a BBQ but, if I do stay on track with my veganism, I should be able to enjoy quite a few more BBQ later in the year where the food is not limited to grilled vegetables.

Bar opening – one of my boyfriend’s friend has just opened a mobile bar and we went to the opening night last night. It’s a cool idea. The “bar” is intergrated into a vehicle so that they can drive to weddings, birthday parties and company events to cater for the guest. The vehicle itself is well made and looks really good. I always doff my cap to people who are willing to take a risk and set up a business on their own.

And that is about it. I am also enjoying the lighter evenings and being woken up from the sunshine coming in through the window in the morning. It is certainly easier to get out of bed in the morning. Spring is definitely here! Long may the sun continue to shine.

Too hot to sleep

25 Jun

At the risk of sounding completely British, which I know that I do from time to time, the weather at the moment is just too hot. After this spell of hot weather surely no one in their right mind can deny the existence of climate change. 35 degrees in June. What is the rest of the summer going to be like? Weather like this means that I can’t sleep and me without sleep is not good news for anyone.

I have tried all different strategies. The first, a classic in anyone’s book, was to sleep with the window open. A grand idea until a mosquito woke me up while it was buzzing around my ear at 2 in the morning. Annoyed I trudge out of the bedroom and go to find the insect repellent. That will do the trick. Only it didn’t. I woke up with 5 bites on my right legs and three on my left wrist. I don’t know what was wrong with the rest of my body that the menace decided not to eat the rest of me.

So I can’t sleep with the window open anymore. I now have fans in the bedroom which I have found make no real difference either. They just tend to circulate the warm air around. Plus, they are loud and keep me awake at night.

Two nights ago in utter frustration, I convinced myself that the living room was actually cooler than the bedroom. (This was after a short period of about 3 minutes when I was on the balcony with my bed sheet in the lovely cool evening air. I suddenly realised that if they can bite me 8 times by coming through the window, advertising myself as night-time-alfresco-all-you-can-eat buffet to the insect was probably not the best idea I had even had.) Of course, the living room was no more cool than the bedroom. The heat is affecting my brain and impairing my ability to make sound judgments. I am not sure what my excuse is for the rest of the year.

thermometer-693852__340Being on holiday when the weather is so hot is no problem. In fact, it is the reason why we book holidays. When we have to cope with wearing business dress and going into the office, it is just not fair. I can’t sleep, think straight and I can’t run outside!

This morning was the first time that I have been able to go running outside because the weather had cooled this morning. I got the trainers on quick and got outside before the mercury was pushing towards 30 degrees again, as it was by the early afternoon.

Of course, there are advantages to weather, such as a BBQ every night, not having to remember to pick up the umbrella before leaving the house in the morning and the washing drying in super quick time. On Friday, it was almost dry before I had even hung it out!

It has just turned nine in the evening here and it is still 25 degrees. I am hoping that the combination of the heat and the run from this morning has tired me out and I will drop off effortlessly tonight but I am not holding out too much hope. It is still too hot to sleep…
